Contender Series Week 2 Picks and Best Bets: The second week of the Contender Series kicks off on Tuesday, September 7th from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The event was to be headlined by Darian Weeks taking on fellow LFA stand out Josh Quinlan. However, with a member of Weeks’ team testing positive for COVID-19, Weeks was pulled from the event and replaced with Logan Urban.
Due to the short notice nature of the fight, Quinlan comes in as the -290 betting favorite. However, the biggest favorite on the card is former ONE Championship featherweight contender Muin Gafurov, as he comes in as the -390 betting favorite over Canadiain two-division champion Chad Anheliger.
⇢ Contender Series Week 2 Preview
Logan Urban vs. Josh Quinlan: DWCS Week 2 Picks
Josh Quinlan is 5-0 and is coming off three straight wins on the LFA. His opponent Logan Urban has been 5-1 since making his professional debut in 2018, with all five wins coming on the mid-west regional scene.
Although Quinlan has just as many wins as Urban in his career, he has faced far better competition. With Urban coming in on short notice, he has not much more than a puncher’s chance in this match-up. Take Quinlan for the win.
Mario Sousa vs. Chidi Njokuani: DWCS Week 2 Picks
Former Bellator contender Chidi Njokuani will try to crack the UFC roster on Tuesday night as he takes on Brazillian Mario Sousa.
Njokuani is 19-7 as a professional, with his most recent win coming at LFA 81; before that, Njokuani faced several high-level talents from the Bellator roster, including Rafael Carvalho and John Salter.
His opponent is the young up and comer Mario Sousa, who already won the Contender Series last year, but failed to earn a contract.
While Njokuani is a talented and entertaining striker, the upside in this match-up is on Sousa. Take Sousa to get the win in a very close fight.
Saimon Oliveira vs. José Alday: DWCS Week 2 Picks
Saimon Oliveira takes on Jose Alday in a men’s bantamweight bout on Tuesday night. Alday is coming in on short notice, replacing Javid Basharat, who was pulled from the event due to visa issues.
With Alday coming in on short notice, he may have his hands full against the very talented Oliveira. If Alday can’t close out the show or turn the fight in his favor early, it might be a matter of time before Oliveira finds the submission. Take Oliveira in this match-up.
Bruno Korea vs. Carlos Vergara: DWCS Week 2 Picks
A men’s featherweight bout sees Brazillian Bruno Korea taking Carlos Vergara. Korea is 12-3-1, with most of his experience coming on the Brazillian and South American regional scenes. Vergara is 8-2-1 as a professional, with his most recent win coming against Jacob Silva at Fury FC 44 earlier this year.
Korea is the firm betting favorite, but Vergara may have the skill set to nullify what Korea does best. Vergara’s well-rounded skill set may cancel out the striking game of Korea and could give him problems.
While Korea likely wins this fight more times than not, it’s not going to be easy, and the value side is definitely with Vergara in this one.
Muin Gafurov vs. Chad Anheliger: DWCS Week 2 Picks
Former ONE Championship contender Muin Gafurov takes on two-division Canadian champion Chad Anheliger on Tuesday night.
Gafurov is 17-3 as a pro, with his most recent win coming at UAE Warriors 15 back in January. As for Anheliger, the Canadian is 10-5 as a pro. However, after starting his career with a 2-5 record, Anheliger has strung together eight straight wins, with his most recent victory coming against TUF 29 finalist Brady Heistand.
While Gafurov likely wins this fight about 2 out of 3 times, the current price of -390 on the Tajikistan fighter is far past the point of value. At this point, the value sides with the Canadian in this match-up. Stake your wager accordingly, but back Anheliger in this one.
