CM Punk, otherwise known as Phil Brooks, retired from wrestling back in 2014 after a series of contract disputes and injuries.
Brooks transitioned to professional MMA in 2015, and signed with the UFC in 2016. Brooks made his professional MMA debut with the UFC in September of 2016, fighting under the name ‘CM Punk’. Brooks went 0-2 as a fighter, and was released from the UFC in 2018.
Brooks is the first of many former WWE wrestlers who are rumored to be taking their talents to the Jacksonville, Florida-based wrestling promotion. AEW’s CEO Tony Khan is the son of Jacksonville Jaguar owner Shahid Khan, and has been the operator of the promotion since its inception in 2019.
